Writing a Book Is Not About Time or Talent.
Make Your Imperfect Wednesday Your Perfect Saturday.
This Wednesday afternoon, I am lacing up my hiking boots and heading into the Great Smoky Mountains for one of the shorter trails on my list, and I want to be upfront with you: that feels a little off-schedule for me. My rhythm is Saturday mornings. That is my time, my ritual, the window I have always claimed for everything trail-related.
The thing is, I am on a mission to hike every single trail in that park, and waiting for the perfect Saturday is going to leave a lot of trails unchecked. So Wednesday afternoon it is. I will hike a modest trail, keep my commitment to my hiking buddy Sara who is joining me, and be home in time to cook dinner for Jeff and Scotty. I woke up extra early a couple of mornings this week just to make room for it.
If you have been waiting for the right time to write your book, you are doing exactly what I would do if I just stayed home and waited for Saturday.
The Real Reason Most Authors Never Start Writing Their Books
Most aspiring authors believe they are not writing their books because they do not have enough time or experience. Those feel like legitimate reasons, and I understand why writers hold onto them. They are rarely the real reason, though.
What actually keeps books unwritten is the decision to wait. So many people who want to write books are waiting for the right season, the right stretch of uninterrupted time, and the right level of confidence before they take one single step forward. The idea is alive and real. They know their stories belong in the world. Still, they hold out for conditions that are never quite going to arrive the way they imagine them.
These same people do genuinely hard things in every other area of their lives. They build businesses, raise children, navigate real loss, and learn new skills from scratch at ages when most people stop trying. When writing a book comes up, though, they stall. The desire is there, the story is there, and the ability is usually there, too. What is missing is the decision to go on a Wednesday.
Clarity Follows Action, Not the Other Way Around
Here is what nobody told most aspiring authors. Clarity does not arrive before the action, and confidence follows movement rather than preceding it. Your book does not need perfect conditions, and you do not need to feel completely ready before you begin. You need a willingness to move before everything feels certain.
When you take that first step, something shifts. Decisions get clearer, confidence shows up, and the path that looked murky from the couch looks a whole lot more navigable once you are actually on it. Pay attention to that, because the next time you stall, your job is to remember to make a move rather than sit and hope.
Stop waiting for confidence. That could be a long wait, and your story deserves better than indefinite postponement.
The Accountability Secret That Helps Writers Actually Finish
My friend Sara is hiking with me Wednesday, and because she is counting on me, I am one thousand percent more likely to actually show up and hit that trail. Accountability is not a crutch. Accountability is strategy.
The same principle works for writers. If you want stronger momentum and consistency as you write your book, write with someone. Tell someone your goal. Make a commitment. Find a writing partner, a group, or a guide who expects you to show up.
At Cripple Beagle Publishing, our Book Development Cohort is built on exactly this idea. Writers who work alongside other writers finish books. Our next cohort starts July 1, and spots are limited.

P.S. The trails always look flat on the maps. This one is usually black bear territory. Wish me luck!
